Roasted Chestnut

Definitely doesn’t taste like Chestnut. More like a bitter medicinal almond. Or maybe Walnuts, but nothing close to chestnut.

Inkling Advent Day 24. This is heading toward bitterness, so next time I’ll certainly give it a shorter steep. The flavor really does taste like chestnuts, plus that slightly harsh black tea. I’m enjoying it sweetened with milk, but it may be a little simplistic for me to want to purchase for myself. And as always, I wouldn’t mind the flavor being even stronger. I like the nuttiness though.

It’s not really what I expected.

Solid tea, but the overwhelming, almost artificial, almond/coconut flavor tends to drown out the others. It’s not bad but I feel like that lowers the rating overall for me.

Smooth, but a blast of almonds and coconuts. Underneath there’s some chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Hard to taste anything else.

I would turn down the almond/coconut – from 10 to like 4? – and I think this tea would be better. I’ll be drinking it through the cold months, but not sure I’d order again.

I received this tea as a loose-leaf sample in a subscription box. I was very excited when I opened it and found that it smells like an Almond Joy! I love Almond Joy. I didn’t see coconut listed as an ingredient on the package, so this intrigued me. I could still faintly smell it after steeping. The taste of this tea has a nice mellow nuttiness. It seems to linger for just the right amount of time, keeping me sipping, but not making me feel like the tea is lacking.

Another of my randomly purchased teas from TeaSource. I think I may have ordered because I got a sample I liked in my Sips By box? Unsure.

I didn’t realize that this also has hojicha and maté in it, so I steeped it as a black tea. Luckily it turned out fine.

I can definitely taste the hojicha, it has mellow roasted and autumn leaf notes. Otherwise, this tea seems more almond than chestnut to me. But not in a marzipan way, which is nice. It brings to mind more of an almond-vanilla custard sort of flavor. And I feel like there’s some coconut here as well?

Unfortunately, it just can’t compete with Simpson & Vail’s Almond Sugar Cookie black tea.

Which reminds me, I need to drink that one again… ❤

ETA: The more I drink this, the more it reminds me of coconut macaroons. Which is odd as coconut isn’t even mentioned in the flavor description…

Happy Festivus! (I’m probably the only person on here who celebrates Festivus as their winter holiday, so Happy Day to everyone else!)

This is, in fact, the first year I haven’t had to work on Festivus, so I decided to treat myself by going out to lunch. It is a rainy, rainy day today, so I definitely wanted warm and cozy… so I went to my favorite cafe in town (and the only one that actually serves loose leaf brewed pots of tea, offering a small selection of teas from TeaSource) and ordered a BLT on toasted sourdough with a side cup of today’s soup (Squash Bisque, mmm!) and a pot of this tea.

This is a really nice nutty tea! It brews so smooth, and the base almost has a dark chocolate-bittersweetness to it, underneath roasty, toasty nuts. It’s incredibly smooth and wonderful on a dreary day. I’d really recommend giving this a try to folks looking for Chestnut teas, or nutty teas lacking the syrupy-sweet marzipan flavor that seems to be present in most of them.

A bit too dark and roasty for me. It reminds me a lot of burnt coffee. I think it could have been the mate, but I’m not sure. While my sample is a bit old, I would have liked more nutty flavours in my cup. It might be the age of the sample, though.

As stated by someone previous I’m really surprised that this tea is rated so low. It makes a great alternative to coffee in the morning for really waking you up and the flavor and aroma is amazing. I agree that it smells more of almonds than of chestnuts, but for an early morning tea it’s really hard to beat. My wife also loves this tea so this is one of very, very few teas that I buy by the pound. If nothing else try a sample.

Not sure why this one has had such low ratings from others. I find it to be absolutely delicious and the perfect holiday tea! The black/oolong base is perfectly balanced: deep and rich but with a nice silky mouth feel and the flavor is spot-on chestnut. I find myself reaching for this one on those days when I’m not in the mood for a straight black tea but I also don’t want the sweet/heavy flavor of the many dessert teas I have in my collection. I gave my roommate 2oz of this one for Christmas and she has already finished it and gone back for another 4oz bag!

i’m skeptical of blends that combine green, black, oolong, white, etc. this one has mate, oolong, and black tea in it, and my first thought is, “sounds like a year-end blend trying to get rid of all the tea that didn’t sell” i wish they had named this almond instead of chestnut. it smells like almond, and it tastes like almond. not as strong of almond as i would like, however. if i drink a flavored tea, i really want the flavor to stand out, and here, it’s really just ho-hum. it’s nothing better than what you could go buy at the grocery store in tea bags, it’s a perfectly okay, but mundane, cup of tea. so there you go.
